Four impactful campaign films were created for meld.onlinediscriminatie.nl. These films offer an unfiltered look at the violent, discriminatory language used on social media and online platforms. The power of the campaign lies in revealing the person behind the screen.
During the shoot, we faced the challenge of creating four distinct environments where discriminatory comments could be seen, all within two days and with a small crew. Rather than viewing this as an obstacle, we saw it as an opportunity. We sought out locations that already had strong character to them. Where just by looking at them, viewers would instantly understand the setting.
For the lighting, I chose a low-key setup to create high contrast, isolating our subjects and leaving them alone in typically public spaces. We wanted to avoid distracting the viewer with unnecessary camera shakes, so we filmed everything from a tripod. This way you can really focus on the expresion of the actor.
These smaller shoots are always enjoyable, largely because they require tight collaboration—you work as a team rather than just focusing on your own "island."
This was also one of my first productions to be showcased across the Netherlands in a public campaign. The films were featured for two weeks as part of an out-of-home campaign at the four largest train stations in the country: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and The Hague.
