This Verisure commercial was a lot of fun to create. We recorded in the span of two half-days: one in a mock hospital near Amsterdam and another in a home in the center of Rotterdam. We delivred not one but three different commercials.
The commercial above centers around a young girl leaving her home without fully telling her mother where she's going. In her rush, she waves off her mother's concerns and heads out quickly for work.
To convey a sense of security, we gave the indoor scenes a warm tint, creating a safe, cozy atmosphere. In contrast, the outdoor lighting was much cooler, emphasizing the uncertainty of the outside world. When the girl steps into the cooler-toned exterior, it feels as though she’s entering unknown territory.
Only when the mother receives a notification confirming her daughter’s safe return does she feel a sense of relief. When the daughter finally arrives home, she reenters the warm, safe space.
With a small team, collaboration was key, and it all came together seamlessly! Thanks to thorough storyboarding and detailed lighting plans, we didn’t have to spend time on set adjusting camera or lighting setups. This allowed us to move smoothly through each shot and provided extra breathing room on set. With the storyboards as our guide, we could focus on capturing each shot as envisioned.
For the storyboarding process, I used AI to help visualize Victor's ideas. Although it's still a relatively new tool it turned out to be verry helpful. Especially since we wouldn’t have hired a storyboard artist due to budget constraints. AI allowed us to bring our vision to life more effectively. I used ComfyUI with a custom workflow that transforms photos into drawn-style stills, enabling us to create storyboards directly from our images. Below you can see some examples of how the photo's get turned into drawings.
Shooting anamorphic also helped with subject isolation. As much of the commercial takes place in narrow hallways, we wanted to keep the scenes open without confining the characters, while still emphasizing them. Using anamorphic at 65mm, we were able to maintain the depth of a longer lens but with the wide horizontal view of a spherical lens around 35mm. This provided the depth we wanted with a broader field of view, achieving both isolation and spaciousness.
Seeing it air on tv was a blast, but shooting it was even more fun. Below you can take a peek behind the scenes!
